This axis deer is an introduced species. They outcompete the native whitetails and mule deer. There's also no hunting season on them - they're fair game all year long. That might explain why this guy was so very nervous.

I got up before dawn on Saturday morning, hoping to catch the turkeys as they left their roost. I never did see them, but while I was waiting this guy very carefully came out and browsed a bit.
